i did manage to get all of my important files off the disk, though it took two trips to fry's (accidently bought an IDE enclosure)
though i am not a happy camper.
i got my drive repartitioned, spent several hours installing arch. it's a small distro, but it uses wget's passive-ftp mode so it takes forever to download everything. spent some time installing xorg and kdemod. kdemod didn't work, so i installed kdebase instead. everything is going swimmingly. i get knetwork manager up and running. after installing my network drivers and watching knetwork manager crash all of one time, wireless works fine. so i start doing some stress tests. i'm not getting the best battery life, so i install laptop-mode-tools and configure it. restart.
sound broken.
not just alsa. arts, oss, esd, and toss are broken too. i can get system sound out of oss by chmod 777 /dev/dsp, but it breaks again on restart and i don't get sound out of amarok or firefox. i spend at least four hours trying to fix it. i recompile alsa, nothing. install new drivers, nothing. disable acpi, nothing. disable laptop-mode, nothing. make alsa load first, nothing. so i boot into arch again to shut down for the night.
wireless = broken.
at that point i stare dumbfounded at my screen. then i snap the arch disc in half and delete the partitions from my computer.
